Felted Earflap Hat

Its been colder here then previous winters and I find that with all the hats I have my ears have been getting cold. I've found plenty of patterns for earflap hats but I thought one that was felted with be better to help cut the wind and be better in the wet snow/rain for southeast Alaska.

So I had this left over yarn from other projects and found a pattern in one of my books, called Felt It.

You start out knitting the two ear flaps separately and then you combine them with cast-on stitches until you have the basis of the hat. Then you work your way around and around until you start decreasing for the crown.

If I hadn't added the snowflake pattern it would have been a very quick knit but then it would also have been boring!


Here we are in the pre-felting stage. I'm a little concerned that the snowflake part where I carried the yarn might be a little too tight but we'll see how it felts up.

And here we are - already to go! We had a windy walk on the beach and my ears were warm!


The middle part is a little tight but while it was still wet I wore it around to help stretch it out. I think if I make another one with a pattern in it I'll make the larger size.

Happy New Year 2009

Happy New Year Everyone! We spent a quiet new years eve with Marc at the house. Tim had schedule a special showing of Mr. Whitekeys Alaska History, first 10,000 years on 360 North so we popped a bottle of champagne and prepared ourselves for some laughs. It was quite funny but a little Anchorage-centric for my tastes. I can say though, I did learn more about the state by watching this show…

We got these New Year hats for our first new year together after we got married. We've shared them with guests and have signed them each year so its pretty interesting to look back and see who we've spent the end of one year and the beginning of another year with.

Blue Silky Wool Hat

I've been wanting a new hat for almost a year now and I finally got time in my knitting schedule to make myself one. The pattern came from a Christmas gift last year, 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders. I picked up this yarn last winter at the local yarn shop, Skeins.

Its light and warm, but not bulky or itchy. I've worked with silk blends before and have found that sometimes the yarn splits. I didn't have that problem with this blend. I will definitely buy this yarn again.
